The Skill of Ending a Habit
Is there a habit that you would like to stop but you've been finding it challenging to do so?
Then you should buy my new...
JUST KIDDING
Then you should try this.
Commit to NOT partaking in that action for the rest of TODAY.
And tomorrow when you wake up, commit to NOT partaking in that action for the rest of THAT day.
Easy to say right? But how to increase the strength of this commitment with yourself?
Have you ever used any devices like Alexa, Siri or Bixby? You say their name first, and then give the command right? Try this command on your mind:
"Hey (your first name), THANK YOU for practicing abstinence today."
(in your mind, the word abstinence should be CLEARLY defined)
Also, the label for the thing you are practicing can be changed depending on what action you are trying to end. In my own case I say "THANK YOU for being celibate today".
When you say thank you ahead of time for something, it confirms to your subconscious that it is already happening. So that way you stop TRYING to end the habit, instead now the habit has ALREADY been dropped for today. You can deal with tomorrow when tomorrow comes, but at least for TODAY the habit has been dropped.
And just try your best!
If you relapse that's okay, try the same method with an easier habit that you would like to end. The more wins you accumulate, the more your brain will believe in the power of this affirmation.
I'd love to know your results!
