The End of Humanity

According to the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, humanity is living in an unsustainable manner that will result in the TOTAL extinction of the human race. Why is this making me think of cigarette smokers? I like to find patterns in the macro that overlap with the micro.

At least cigarette smokers know they are hurting themselves though, I mean in many countries they even show pictures of damaged organs or dying people on the boxes (except for in the US, China and a few other countries).

Humanity is so distracted that we haven't noticed that we are heading towards oblivion. I'd like for humanity to survive, thrive and live sustainably... however what can I do when most of the world is moving in the direction of extinction? I guess I can write and make content until eventually one of my descendants will buy a big tub of popcorn to munch on while they watch the world collapsing.

Maybe this oblivion is supposed to happen, what do I know? Maybe this is part of the cycle of life in this universe. Selfish organisms in this universe are destined to cause their own extinction, even though they had the chance to expand into something extraordinarily incalculable.
